I am trying to put a password on some PDFs to restrict editing but allowing printing and copying. Every time I add security settings, then close the document, it will no longer open again. An error pops up and tells me that the file was damaged and cannot be repaired. Help?

What is the exact version of Acrobat that you're using? Did you use Acrobat to create the PDFs, or did something else?

I am using Acrobat 9 Pro. I used ABBYY FineReader 12 to create and OCR the PDFs before putting the security on.

I'm wondering if it could be related to a bad PDF to begin with. You can use Preflight in Acrobat to see if it reports any syntax errors for the unsigned PDF:

Okay, I have just done this for one of my original PDFs. The results reported "No problems found".

Use Acrobat for OCR. Other PDF-processing apps have many flaws.

I have found that I get MANY errors when OCRing large batches using Acrobat, so it is not realistic for me to use it for that particular process. Acrobat itself has many flaws.
