Is there a way to search and highlight multiple text items in a document?

It's not compatible with Acrobat 9.

Hmm, when was the redaction tool added to Acrobat? was that X? If it was in 9, then the Action could be easily converted to an A9 batch sequence. Otherwise it would require performing a word by word search.

In your version it's only possible using a script, like this (paid-for) tool I've developed exactly for this purpose:

Can your tool search for multiple texts at once?

I would have a list of text that I want to highlight in the document
