I have never set any password but suddenly when I was editing a file I was asked for password. What should I do?
Previously when I wanted to edit a file, I was asked for password. When I asked the person who sent me the original file, he said he had never set up any password for the file.

Please share a screen shot showing the Acrobat window and the password request. Please do NOT try to email it, but come back to the forum and use the Insert Image icon, otherwise it will be lost. If you do not know how to get a screen shot, please let us know what system you are on.

Ok, the file seems to have a permissions password. To check this use File > Properties and click the Security tab. I imagine it will say Security Method: Password. This is common and normal. It does NOT mean you have to quote a password to open the file, but you need the password to edit it. Some systems will add a password without the original creator knowing what it is, to make uneditable files.

Yes, you are right. After checking File > Properties >Security tab, Security Method shows Password. When I choose "No Security," I am asked to Enter Password.
How can I change the security setting without password? Or is there a default password?
Thanks

Apparently my system added a password without my knowing what it is, to make uneditable file. Anyway to solve the problem?

If you did not make the file, it is very unlikely that YOUR system added it. Rather, it was added when the file was created, perhaps without the knowledge of the person making it.
To edit or combine files you need that password. Often that is not availablem and files, once protected, cannot be used in the ways we might wish.

I created the file and edited several times but it suddenly asked me password.
How could the software developer allow such thing (add password requirement without user's knowledge) happening? Is there any way to get rid of the password requirement?
Thanks

How did you create the file?

I scanned 20 pages separately and combined them into one file using Adobe Pro. At the first several times, I had no problem to edit the file until I got a pop-up screen asking for password. Anyway to get rid of the password?
Thank you!

You cannot remove a password unless you know what it is.
Nothing is impossible but I never heard of Acrobat just adding security without being asked to do so.

We've said that you need the password to remove it.
Now, it's asking for a password on one particular file. Is this a file your ADDING to a combined file - never yet saved in Acrobat? What do you scan with - software? I assume it's not Acrobat, since you'd scan all 20 pages at once in Acrobat.

Yes, the scanned page was saved on PDF file before combining it into a file. I scanned it with a printer using ControlCenter3 software.

It is possible that a file that has become corrupted will behave this way. It's a side effect of the corruption and no password security is actually in place. This is what I suspect is happening in this case.

Yes, George, I guess you are right about it. The problem is I can do nothing to get rid of the password 😞

Ok, so it was never opened in Acrobat? If so, it's hard to blame Acrobat for putting a password on it! I would look in the ControlCenter3 software for an option to set a password. And look into doing multipage scanning in Acrobat, it could save you a lot of time.

I am not sure the difference between Acrobat saved file and PDF file. The ControlCenter3 does not have option for setting a password - I guess there is no need for a scanner to have such function. I did not know I can use Acrobat to scan. I looked at Acrobat XI Pro and do not see "scan" anywhere. How to do scan using Acrobat?
Thanks

At least some Brother software has the option to save a file of type "secure PDF". For creating files in Acrobat start in the File menu, most things are there.
