Hi dear community,
I need a little help.
I have read that I can use the generated images with Adobe Firefly for commercial purposes. So, I subscribe to Adobe Firefly, I generate an image, download it, and can use this image for my own book as a cover for sale (both digitally as an e-book and in print) without any legal concerns? Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thank you.

Hello @Sz380230439fvv,

For any of the products using generative AI features (such as Firefly web site, Ilustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Express) these are the guidelines for use: Adobe Generative AI User Guidelines.  These guidelines say that content created with generative AI features can be used for commercial use unless the product is in beta and it says it cannot be used for commercial use.  The only other thing to note is if you are using the free Firefly plan, you cannot remove or crop out the watermark, even if your use is noncommercial/personal only.

Whether Adobe says it is commercially safe to use and whether the use of an image presents any legal or intellectual property issues are different questions. On whether it is acceptable to use an AI image on a book cover based on intellectual property issues (copyright, do you actually own the image, can you licence the image to the publisher, etc.)—these are legal questions that are best answered by your legal counsel.  This area of the law is in flux and ambiguous, and different based on region. If you need to make business decisions based on the answer, it is best to talk to your attorney.

My best,

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.
Yes, I will think about it and perhaps find another solution, which is the safest way.

Just a few questions as I am not really sure where to get the info from as I have looked everywhere.

  1.  My murrent plan is Adobe Firefly Individual
  2. The purpose of my work is Commercial Use (for Print Product non-digital products). I have generated a few images in Firefly which I intend to use on other Adobe products such as Adobe Express and Adobe Photoshop to design Notebook & Journal covers that will eventually be sold on various sales channels: Instagram, Etsy, Pinterest etc....

3. Question: Attribution & Watermarks
Images will be slightly modified on the final product so any kind of watermark will be removed so how do I attribute Adobe Firefly in the final product output, on the notebook or journal or any kind of print work? Can I use Adobe Firefly logo to add on the back of the notebook like "Ai generated image by/in Adobe Firefly"?

Hi @mayele_2024,

Generally when Adobe responds to these questions, they refer you back to the generative AI Guidelines:

They generally do not answer specific questions or hypotheticals. I recommend you consult legal counsel, who can review the terms of use, and advise you on what your legal obligations are.

Yes, Adobe Firefly allows you to use generated images for commercial purposes, including book covers, as long as you comply with their licensing terms.

Hi @falcon_5606,

I would only caution that the poster's question said "without any legal concerns". To me that is beyond just a licence issue and also includes copyright issues. Again, she should consult legal counsel to be sure.
