I am not sure what is happening based on your description. Would you be willing to share a link to it so we can see it?

You can change how much the generated images adhere to the structure by sliding the Strength slider:

Also, your structure reference image and the image you are generating should have the same aspect ratio.

If neither of these help, please explain in more detail or include a link to it.
