"आख़िरी टोपी"

पेरिस के पुराने मोहल्ले मॉनमार्त्र की एक सँकरी, पत्थरों वाली गली में एक छोटी-सी दुकान थी — चापो द लुमिएर (रोशनी की टोपियाँ)। दुकान के बाहर का साइनबोर्ड धूप और बरसात से फीका पड़ चुका था। उसके बगल में एक पुरानी किताबों की दुकान थी और दूसरी ओर एक बूढ़े व्यक्ति की वायलिन मरम्मत की जगह। इस गली से अब शायद ही कोई गुजरता।

इस दुकान की मालकिन थीं — मैडम कोलेट मोरो, एक बुज़ुर्ग मिलिनर (टोपी बनाने वाली)। एक समय था जब उनके बनाए टोपियों की पेरिस में धूम थी। रेशमी धागों, विदेशी पंखों और तारों जैसी सजावट से वे ऐसी टोपियाँ बनाती थीं, जिन्हें पहन कर महिलाएँ खुद को किसी परी कथा की रानी समझती थीं।

लेकिन अब ज़माना बदल गया था। लोग अब टोपी पहनते नहीं थे, और फैशन की दुनिया ने हाथ से बनी चीज़ों को भुला दिया था। मैडम कोलेट की दुकान में अब सिर्फ धूल, यादें, और अधूरी कहानियाँ बची थीं।

हर सुबह वे अपनी दुकान खोलतीं, एक कप गुनगुनी चाय बनातीं और खिड़की के पास बैठकर अपनी आख़िरी बनाई गई टोपी को देखतीं — एक नीले मख़मली टोपी, जिसमें सफेद परियों जैसे पंख और एक सुनहरी कली जड़ी हुई थी। ये टोपी उन्होंने अपनी बेटी एलोइस के लिए बनाई थी, जो कभी युद्ध में नर्स बनकर गई थी… और फिर कभी वापस नहीं आई।

कोलेट को पता था कि एलोइस अब शायद इस दुनिया में नहीं थी, लेकिन वह हर दिन उसके लौटने का इंतज़ार करती थीं। वही नीली टोपी उस उम्मीद की आख़िरी लौ थी।

एक शाम, जब सूरज की आख़िरी किरण दुकान की खिड़की पर पड़ी, कोलेट उसी खिड़की के पास बैठी-बैठी सो गईं… या शायद चली गईं। उनके चेहरे पर एक हल्की मुस्कान थी — जैसे उन्होंने किसी को आते देखा हो।

अगली सुबह, पड़ोसी वायलिन मरम्मत करने वाले ने देखा कि दुकान अब कभी नहीं खुलेगी। खिड़की के अंदर सिर्फ एक नीली टोपी रखी थी — बिल्कुल वैसी, जैसी कोई माँ अपनी खोई हुई बेटी के लौटने के इंतज़ार में बनाती है।
