Question

Matted / unmatted in AME

Hi everyone,

I'm making some animations in After effects for a broadcast client.

2 of the many render specifications are Unmatted alpha channel and EBU R128 audio.

Stand alone these are no big issue but I struggle to find a workflow to apply both. I can render Unmatted directly in After effects but I can't render with EBU R128 audio. And in AME I have the opposite problem.

AME can render with EBU R128 very easely but I somehow can't find an Unmatted alpha menu.

Am I missing something? Please help.

Which video CODEC is being requested?

I'm not sure what is meant by matted and unmatted.  Usually when defining an alpha channel to be included with the color channels it's either straight or premulitplied.

To include the alpha, we need to use a CODEC that supports it.  If using Adobe Media Encoder presets, find the ones that include "with alpha" in the preset name.  For example, if the format is set to QuickTime, we'll see the "ProRes 4444 with alpha" preset.

A quick way to find presets (and the correpsonding formats that support an alpha channel) is to use the search text field in the Preset Browser panel to show "with alpha".

Hi Warren.

The problem I'm facing is that when I for example use 4444 with alpha I have no options to choose straight or premultiplied. What I need is a FILL and KEY file with a straight settings.

The ProRes 4444 with alpha preset should result in a straight alpha channel.

If you need a fill file and a key file, would it work for your delivery to encode in two times?  The first item in the Queue rendering without the alpha (so, RGB with audio and no alpha) and then the second duplicate item in the Queue using the "Render Alpha Only" check box?

I do similar delivery for sports graphics using the Animation CODEC with the first render being the picture (filename.mov) and the second being the alpha (filename_matte.mov).
