Today we’re introducing three significant updates to our vector workflows in After Effects beta version 26.0x8:
SVG Import
An SVG of the After Effects logo imported as native Shape layers.
Client sends you a dozen SVG logos to use in a project? What once required a tedious, multi-app process is now fast and easy: SVGs import as compositions of ready-to-use native shape layers, no conversion required. Gradient fills, strokes, and transparency are preserved and fully editable.
There are a few limitations of SVG import:
Gradient support for converted Illustrator layers
Converting Illustrator layers to native Shape layers.
We’ve improved fidelity when converting Illustrator layers to shape layers, reducing the need for manual cleanup and rework.
Convert Illustrator layers to native shape layers by selecting them and choosing Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer in the Layer menu or layer context menu.
Gradients will remain fully editable, and their properties can be animated in the Timeline.
Gradient properties
Note: Freeform gradients and blend modes from Illustrator are not retained. Blend modes can be re-applied within After Effects.
Vector Gradient Scale and Rotation
A gradient with Scale and Rotation changes.
Scale and Rotation unlock new design possibilities for gradient fills and strokes. These animatable controls combine with existing gradient properties to give you deeper creative flexibility, whether you're designing dynamic vector effects or abstract backgrounds.
The new properties are available for all shape layer gradients, including both imported SVGs and converted Illustrator shapes.
Share Your Feedback
These features are still in development, and we need your input! Please test these new features with Illustrator files and SVGs of your own and let us know how they’re working for you. Your feedback helps shape the future of After Effects.

Need gradient mesh to actually work please. Also need angled and reflected gradients without resorting to layer styles (which render out of order, necessitating annoying pre comps).

Wonderful updates! The gradient scale and rotation are going to be a godsend
Really looking forward to this update

Being able to import SVGs is such a big deal!
I think importing SVGs as linked raster images (like the current implementation of AI files) and converting them to shape layers or continuously rasterize later as needed feels much more practical.
For example, in a situation where the client has provided the company’s logo data, it’s important to keep the original file accurately within the project. Those should be collected using Collect Files.
This beta really got me excited, Thanks!

Would also be great to be able to paste SVG data from figma
Figma:
Copy - Copy as SVG
AE:
Paste -- pastes as shape layer.
Similar to how this script works.

Would love to see a toggleable switch to automatically convert all Illustrator layers to shape layers and rename them accordingly. The process of manually creating shape layers, deleting the Illustrator layers, and renaming them is extremely tedious

On the "no reference to the original SVG in the Project panel" aspect......
Is there a single other importable footage/file that operates in the same way? Genuinely asking, I can't think of any 😅
I'm okay with something breaking from the standard like that if it needs to be, if its special in someway, but there should atleast be a pretty good/obvious reason

I mean, we have .json, why don't we have .xml, actually?

Wait.... We do! (will!)
You're importing .svg's, genuinely just an .xml file with special rules. Just take it to the logical conclusion
Introducing .svg importing! (and .xml data file importing, with json<-->xml interchange/conversion)
Get ready! An upgraded Adobe Community experience is coming in January.
