Advanced 3D is not working on a high-end PC

Hello everyone,

I've been experiencing an issue with the advanced 3D render engine. Whenever I attempt to insert a 3D object or enable the advanced 3D engine, After Effects immediately crashes.

What confuses me is that on older-spec PCs with GPUs like the Nvidia 1660 or 3050, the engine works perfectly fine, and I'm able to animate and view the 3D objects.

My current PC specs are:

  • Intel Core i7-13700K, 3400 MHz, 16 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)
  • Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti 8GB
  • 32GB RAM
Nvidia and Intel drivers are updated.

Could it be a hardware issue with my PC? If so, does anyone have any ideas on what I should troubleshoot?
I'm attaching After Effects log of the exit that happens when I turn on Advanced 3D.

With the new June update (25.3), the Advanced 3D crash issue seems to be resolved (I think… for now). Animations are working, and models are loading without After Effects crashing. Thank you—finally. Seriously, thank you .
Hope to see more improvements with the advanced 3D engine 🫡 @DaciaSaenz .

@Huendli33 I know, right? Still waiting for a fix that doesn’t require administrative privileges to run advanced 3D, because that causes other issues like Animation Composer not working, etc. To be honest, I don’t really understand the problem, because on some PCs it works normally, but on others it needs to be run as admin. Maybe it has something to do with OneDrive server problems, but I'm just guessing at this point.

I've just ran into the same issue, and to my surprise running AE as Admin also did the job for me.

But the even bigger, bad surprise (well, actually no...) is that a company that charges so much for its software is unable to fix such an obviously simple issue (that requires a workaround from Windows XP times; I'm just glad I'm not in a corporate environment where there's no way for this anymore) in more than a year!

I only have a simple Intel HD 630 (no other GPU) and the most recent AE version (25.1), fresh install onto a vanilla Win10 system.

Hi all, I too have encountered this problem “advanced 3d plug-in generated an unexpected exception” when trying to create 3D just from a regular shape in AE. I tried updating drivers, clearing cache, running as administrator, running in safe mode, but nothing helped. AE version 24.3. Maybe I need to install another more stable version?

Friends, I had exactly the same problem. I unexpectedly found that running the application "run as an administrator" helped. The objects started to be added and displayed correctly.

I found the solution that worked for me. Maybe it will work for somebody else too.

I opened my After Effects, clicked import - multiple files - *your obj file and also materials and textures that go with your file* and it works. After that, the app switches to Advanced 3D by itself and everything works.
