After Effects Crash – Error Code (0 :: 42)

New Here ,
May 01, 2025 May 01, 2025

Hi Adobe Support,

I'm experiencing repeated crashes in Adobe After Effects. After working on a project for some time while editing  the program suddenly crashes. I receive the following error:

After Effects can't continue: sorry, After Effects has crashed.
Error Code: (0 :: 42)

This happens consistently and disrupts my workflow. I've tried restarting, updating, and even clearing the cache manually, but the issue persists.

Here are some details that might help:

After Effects version: [25.2.2]

RAM / GPU: [e.g., 64GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 4080]

Please advise how I can resolve this or if there are any patches or known bugs with this error.

Thanks,
[SSOPRODUCTIONS]

Sorry to hear about the crash. How do you launch After Effects - Do you double-click a project file or click its icon? Do you get this error on a specific project? Can you try the solution mentioned in the following community thread: https://adobe.ly/3EHb2HX

Let me know if it helps.

Thanks,
Nishu

SSOPRODUCTIONS,

We've located your crash report.  Thank you for reporting that.  It helps!   Sorry to hear this is happening.  We will need more information as we are having trouble repeating here.

1. Could you clarify the behavior you are seeing?   You say after a while it suddenly crashes.   But after restarting AE it doesn't immediately crash with the same project, correct?  (The same project will work for a while before failing again?)

2. Is this happening with other projects that use Adv 3D engine or just this one?   If unique to this project, can you think of anything special about this project?   Does it use unusually large textures or comp sizes with the 3D?  Does it have unusually large numbers of some kind of 3D layer?    Is it using unusually large models?  Does it have multiple different comps using the Adv 3D engine?    Are you using heavy/slow GPU 2D effects in this project?   Is AE the only application running when this happens?

3.  Does it seem related to anything you are doing when it happens?   For example,  does it seem to happen while you are dragging the mouse?  Does it seem to happen on render export?    Does it seem to happen in a particular comp?   Does turning OFF multi-frame rendering in preferences (see below) make the problem go away or make the time between failure significantly longer?

4.  Are you seeing behavior like this on this system in projects that don't use the Adv 3D renderer at all?

5.  Please try going to AE  Help and "Enable Logging".   The next time you see the crash,  on the very next AE open,  go to Help and "Reveal Logging".  Please send me the After Effects (Beta) Log-last.txt  file directly/privately.   (Note the "last").  Perhaps the log will have details that will help us.

Thank you for contactnig us!  Let's get to the bottom of this.

Seth
