Color Management Issue Between Premiere Pro and After Effects

Hi everyone!

I’m having trouble with color management when transferring a take from Adobe Premiere Pro to After Effects, and I hope someone can help me.

  1. The footage was recorded in HDR, and when I import the video into Premiere, it automatically adopts the Rec.2100 PQ configuration.
  2. In Premiere, I adjust the timeline color space to Rec.709, which gives me good color results.
  3. The issue arises when I send this take to After Effects. The colors change completely and become grayish.
  4. In After Effects, when I access the color management settings, the only available option is Rec.709 PQ. However, selecting this option makes the colors appear extremely blown out and oversaturated.

Does anyone know how I can fix this color issue between the two programs and make After Effects properly match the adjusted Rec.709 colors?

Thanks in advance for any tips or guidance!

Yes, it really is an unfortunate situation. I’ve been in contact with support, who performed tests on my computer, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. They concluded that the issue is with the application’s ability to interpret HDR, it is not fully prepared in this new version. They mentioned that nothing could be done for now, but they would escalate the matter for broader discussion.

I have had that problem too – it's really annoying. I think the problem has been around since the launch of After Effects 2025. In the 2024 version it looks fine. Here's an example. On the left is the 2024 version and on the right is the latest Beta version (it's the same issue with the 2025 version). As you see the colors to the right look burnt out, especially the red tones are almost gone. It looks greenish. I have tried to compensade with the Lumetri Color effect, but it only fixes it slightly. The issue becomes really annoying when you edit in Premiere and want to edit a comp with After Effects, because all of a sudden the colors of the clip is changed and doesn't match the other non-edit clips in the project. By the way in this screen shot I opened the same clip in a new project and the color settings were exactly the same (2.4 Rec. 709).

You guys at Adobe need to fix this as soon as possible.

Hello, thank you for your response!

My version of Premiere Pro is 25.0.0 (Build 61), and my version of After Effects is 25.0.1 (Build 2).

I exported the original footage in Rec. 2100 from Premiere Pro to After Effects, but I still haven’t achieved a positive result and continue to encounter the same issue.

I’m sending a video to illustrate the situation: it shows the original image in Rec. 2100, how it appears in After Effects, and finally how it looks when sent back to Premiere Pro — a final result that no longer matches the original image.

Hi, thanks for repoting it! Could you provide the details on versions of AE and Pr being used? Also, could you try this: bring in the original footage in Pr and send it to AE without first adjusting Rec. 2100 PQ to Rec. 709? Do the colors look correct in this scenario? It would be great if you could send us a clip and project that demonstrates this behavior so we could investigate this further. Thanks!
