FIX the keyboard shortcut migration issue PLEASE

Whenever there is a version update of After Effects, and I get the popup when starting the app to migrate previous settings, I do that - but my shortcuts are never migrated.

This has been the case for many AE versions now, and it never got fixed. There is no way this is supposed to be correct behavior.

The problem, as I understand it, is that AE creates a new aeks folder under their version folder at this directory: C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects

And that new aeks folder fails to copy the folder from the previous aeks folder that was migrated from. That seems like such a mundane and easy thing to do when creating this new folder structure, I'm not sure why it isn't already happening.

The process now is to go there manually and copy pasting the old shortcut file into the new one. But some people might not realize this is happening, or they forget, or those that haven't saved their custom shortcuts, but just changed the default file, will be confused why their shortcuts don't work anymore.

Please fix this!

Hi all,

A fix for this issue was included with After Effects 23.3. Please update to the latest version of AE and let us know if you continue to experience this issue when migrating preferences.

Thanks so much for reporting this,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Thank you for that info @sritterfeld. I've linked this thread to the existing issue that we're investigating so that it will be updated when a fix becomes available for testing in the Beta builds.

Thanks again,

@JohnColombo17100380Hi John, thanks for replying to this 🙂

Glad to see that a fix is under investigation. I am not 100% sure, but considering when the new folder was created and when I made this post, it must've been the update from 23.0 to 23.1.

But it might be that I migrated from 22.6, but I've also had this happen with sequantial version migrating.

I'm sorry I can't provide more information than this, but I hope it is useful. If there is any other way I can aid in getting this fixed, let me know 🙂

Hi @sritterfeld,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We have a fix under investigation for an issue where migrating preferences from more than one version back e.g. from 22.4 to 23.0, skipping versions in between, doesn't properly migrate keyboard shortcuts or workspaces. Does that sound like what you have experienced, or where you migrating preferences from one sequential version to another e.g. 22.6 to 23.0?

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Oh interesting, I had no clue that was a thing. Tried that now, can't confirm if that worked or not, because I already copied them manually. But thanks for the suggestion! That hopefully does the trick 🙂

When you have your keyboard shortcuts set you might want to go sync settings. Then after you update version of After Effects try sync settings on the new version. This may bring your saved keyboard shortcuts into the new version.
