Moving a Timeline Column Too Quickly Rearranges Others Columns Unexpectedly

  • macOS Ventura (13.x), Sonoma (14.7)

When you drag a timeline column too quickly, multiple columns are moved instead of just the one you were dragging. See my attached screen recording and follow along:

  • At 0:01 and 0:05, I drag slowly and everything works as expected.
  • At 0:08 I drag the Render Time column quickly from the right-most to left-most position and then the Video-Solo-Audio-Lock and the Parent & Link columns have suddenly shifted.

If you drag a column and quickly shake your mouse all around like a maniac, then you can end up shuffling all the columns.

@Jessica McMillan

If there was an option like "Reset Column Order" when we right-click one of the Column headers in the Timeline panel, I'd use it.  Having "Save Column Order" and "Load Column Order" would also be very cool.  I collaborate with other designers and we all seem to have a different preference for how those should be arranged from left to right.  I'd file it under "quality of life" improvement.

Nope, I use just one layout. Even across my various Workspaces, it seems I made the timeline columns consistent. On the rare chance I’m working on a smaller monitor, then I might hide some columns for more timeline space (and use one of my “small monitor” Workspaces with fewer other panels).

Updating status to reflect that we have an internal ticket to prioritize.

Thanks for the additional thoughts @sskaz. I will noodle a bit on the column order for workspace vs project... Do you tend to have different layouts based on the composition or do you change your columns a lot?

Hi Jessica,

That’s an interesting idea. Being able to reset their order (and size?) to the default might be useful in some cases, but it might end up being more work to reset them and then still move and resize everything to how I prefer them.

But if we’re wishcasting, I’d love it if columns’ order, visibility, and size/width were saved maybe along with Workspaces. I share projects with colleagues often, and let’s just say I don’t agree with how they arrange their columns or which ones they have visible 😅 . And when there are dozens of comps, it’d be a real nice perk to change all the comps in the project globally.

In the nearly two decades of using AE professionally, I can count the number of times I’ve wanted to maintain another artists’ UI settings on one hand.

Hello @sskaz,

We are able to reproduce the issue you demonstrated in house. Aside from resolving the bug, would having the option to reset the timeline back to the default ordering be valuable?
