15.1 update can't open my project, interface is FUBAR

Hi Adobe,

on top of learning the hard way that all QT7 codecs are now gone and apparently 3rd party codecs such as HAP also, I'm having a terrible time with the 15.1 update.

15.1 keeps crashing, you probably received 20 reports from me

And now I can't even open my project properly and try to save as a previous version. The AE interface partially shows up but wherever I click does not appear to be what's actually there. For example I see the render window but it's actually a composition timeline I'm clicking in. Partial pop up menus appear but I can't click on them or nothing happens if I do.

OSX iMac 27" 2015, fully updated
