3D Text Effects not showing.

Community Beginner ,
Dec 04, 2018 Dec 04, 2018

I'm making a lyric video in after effects and I'm trying to convert the text into a 3D object to use with a camera.  My issue is when the text becomes a 3D object, the text won't render with its effects (glow, blur) or outline.  It just comes up as a solid red alpha on the text.  I have it on Classic 3D for my 3D Renderer.  I'm not sure if it's something with my Mac or I installed something wrong.  I tried this with a solid layer and it renders effects just fine.  It's only the text.  I opened an old project from CS6 from my old Mac and had no issues.  Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.  Thank you!

Thanks for providing proper screen shots (instead of cropped ones)   The problem is that you have fast draft enabled.

We need a screenshot with the modified properties of the text layer revealed. Just press the U key twice, PrintScreen then paste to the forum. This is almost certainly a user error but without seeing what you are doing it could be a hundred different things.

In the meantime, I strongly suggest that you take a look at the user guide by looking here: Basic AE

There are some tutorials there that are pretty good at explaining exactly how to do text animations and deal with 3D layers.

I'm going to check out the Basic AE link you sent but I found this thread becasue I'm also playing with 3D text, trying to add a scatterize and nothing is showing...thanks for your time here!

update: I found a workout with the shatter effect, but still curious why this isn't working!

- Excuse any ignorance, I'm a video editor finally taking the plunge into after effects.

It would help to see your glow settings.  Have you turned the intensity up?  Do you have set to be based on color channels or alpha channel?

Also if you could describe your process step by step, as if you were writing a tutorial how to do what you did.

All I did was drag a pick a basic glow effect on the word and place it on the text.  Once I hit the 3D object button and the effects went away and the text became red.  The text was just the outline (no fill), which I'm guessing can't be a 3D object?  I don't see why you can't have just an outline as 3D text though.  I've had no issues on older versions.

I did another test and it does the same thing for a shape layer too, where the I put a glow, blur, anything on it and it shows up fine but once it's a 3D object it disappears.

It's not an issue of using too much of an effect.  It's the effects not showing up once I hit the switch and make it a 3D object.

No worries.  I had no idea Fast Draft effected 3D text in that way.  I learned something new today

Gutterfish Great catch.

In the future, when you have problems with a layer the easiest way to find the problem would be to start by soloing the layer, then select the text layer, press the U key twice, check the modified properties of the layer in the timeline and start resetting or changing the values until the effect gives you what you want.  If soloing the layer fixes the problem then you have another layer that is causing the problem. If resetting the everything that has been modified fixes the problem then it is something going on with the effects you have added.

Your screenshots would be better if you just showed us everything that had been done to the text layer (could). I don't know about any text animators or layer styles that may have been applied.

If that troubleshooting that way does not fix the problem try creating a new comp with just a text layer and glow applied and see what you get. If you can make it work in the new comp just copy and paste the layer to your original comp.

The other option would be to pre-compose the text layer, open the pre-comp, apply Glow to an adjustment layer, then collapse transformations in the main comp.

I copied your Glow settings and had no problems with CC 18 or 19. There must be something else I don't see that is going on with your layers.

It also looks to me like you are trying to put together a complete video in one comp. The comp looks like it is about 3 minutes long. I think you will find it easier to break the comp up into much smaller parts. When I do this kind of work my comps are never longer than a sentence or phrase or two. It makes putting the entire project and especially dealing with changes a lot easier and faster.
