Today I was trying to add a 3D shape into After Effects to play around, and I noticed that everytime i selected Cinema 4D AE would crash. Before and when it crashes, I have ram still availible and no sign off a hardware issue.
After Effects (23.4)
PC (Windows 10)
1.Open after effects and create a shape layer
2.make it an "object" by hitting the 3d box in collumns
3.Click change renderer and select Cinema 4D
Expected - Renderer changes and utilizes Cinema 4D
Result - After Effects immediately crashes

Would you also update Cinema 4D via Maxon web site?

Along with @ToolfarmJP tip, I have seen this happen when Maxon doesn't have you registered / logged in. Getting the latest installed version will take care of that for you, but you may need to use File > New > Cinema 4D file to generate the log in process.

I face the same issue before and the only solution was to use the previous version of AE.
