Adobe falling behind in AI video editing? [FaceApp]

New Here ,

Hey everyone,

I'm a long-time Adobe user and I've been thinking:  Why is there still no quick AI-based video editing tool in AfterEffects? GAN and Diffusion-based models are rapidly improving and automated frame-by-frame editing has been around for a long time. Why is there still no quick, user-friendly aging, de-aging, digital makeup, etc available in AE? The tech is already here so it should be easy for Adobe to pioneer the market and release a user-friendly desktop version for professional VFX.

I expect Adobe to be at the forefront of AI advances but it looks like they are falling behind. The Neural filters are rather disappointing and useless in comparison to the ease of use and consistency of for example FaceApp. Why not build on the GAN-based technology that allows FaceApp to do quick and seamless AI editing and improve it by offering automated frame-by-frame batch-editing for seamless VFX in video production? Train the models to improve side-angles, and for editing the body as well as the face, and offer higher quality output.

This is crucial for me (and I guess many others) to decide if we should stick with Adobe. Looking forward to any insights or updates on Adobe's plans in embracing AI technology for creative work. BTW the customer service here is terrible. The chat bot is really dumb, and there is no email, phone number or real person to talk to.

Cheers, Lars

AI, even at the best levels, is not a replacement for professional visual effects that are 100% seamless. AI can help separate foreground and background elements (Rotobrush is greatly improved in AE Beta), find a sky, and do a bunch of other tasks that reduce the time it takes to isolate and even replace objects while making them fit perfectly into the shot so they look and feel real can easily take a dozen or more layers with different blend modes, mattes, and color correction to do a good job.

If all you want to do is replace somebody's face for an Instagram reel, there's an app for that. If you want to do the best possible job of telling a story with a shot, it's going to take a human brain and some judgement to do that well. I only hope, for all of the VFX artists, Cinematographers, Directors, and Actors, that the public doens't get so bombarded by AI created imagery and story telling that they are no longer capable of being moved by real art.

I'm for AE reducing the time it takes to do some things, but we are a long way from what it takes to produce truly professional visual effects and animations.

Agree with Rick. You wouldn't use a lot of stuff that flies under the AI banner in a professional production, at least not without a lot of extra work around it and if you look up the respective behind the scenes materials e.g. for the latest "Indiana Jones" movie you'll see that their de-aging is based on their own proprietary tech, but involves not just an AI-based extraction of reference data from older movies and synthesizing new frames, but also complex 3D work. Rinse repeat for other stuff. AI is just another tool, not a magic solution to everything. It can do some things pretty well, others not so much and where AE is concerned, even simple things fail a lot of times like the AI-bolstered Rotobrush or content aware fill. This has still quite a distance to go as does AI at large.
