AE incredible poor performance on Macbook Pro 2018 15 Inch

After Effects' performance on my Macbook is really really poor. I must preview a simple project of 3min with a video, some text set on Overlay and an Audio Spectrum on Quarter, not even Third!!

How's that even possible? I run the latest version as of right now.

Any recommendations?

Specs: Macbook Pro 2018 15 Inch:

2.6GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor

Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz

Radeon Pro 555X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory

16GB 2400MHz DDR4 memory

256GB SSD storage

I must start saying that preview a 3 min video is not a correct approach to preview your comp.

- What is the format of your video? If it is an H264 your computer needs a lot of cycles to decompress it, more even if it is a 4K video.

- Are you using 3D Cameras o 3D lights? if so, are you using the classic 3D renderer or the cinema 4D renderer?

- Do you have enough space on your hard drive to cache the composition?

- What AE version are you using?

- Could you share a screen capture of your timeline to see how many layers are you using?

Thanks for replying. I'll clarify a bit:

- It's an H264.

- No 3D.

- I assigned the cache folder into my 1TB External Hard Drive.

- After Effects CC 2019 v16.1.2

- And here's a screen capture:

Edit: The "Loop" stands for the video. It's just a loop from Beeple that goes on and on.

If I'm missing some info, let me know please.

Thanks again.

3 minutes of H264 video is a "bag full of rocks" for previews. If your external hard drive is not a SSD your playback will be choppy. What you can do to enhance your preview is to set the composition preview to 50% of its size, and change the resolution to Auto or Half. This way you would gain some speed and more frames cached on your previews. Also, I suggest you some more things:

1.- Enter into the AE Preferences and assign at least 300GB for your cache.

2.- Go to File > Project settings and be sure you are using one of the accelerated render options (OpenCL or Metal) in the Video and Processing tab
