Question

AE Video Copilot Ellement 3d and placing buildinings

Every time I place a building using AE VC E3D it ends up floating not connected to the ground.

Camera Tracking, finding a flat place and then placing my Ground Plane Origin and Camera Null or Camera Solid goes well.

So my understanding is to no create a new Black Layer.  From that layer I bring in Video Copilot Effect.  I select a building and almost always the building ends up 100 feet off the ground.  Some wonkey angle.  Do I want to always use a Camera SOLID or Camera NULL?  Sometimes it works other times...  ??

If you are using Element 3D you need to carefully go through the documentation so you completely understand how Element 3D's space relates to AE's 3D space.

When you camera track and set the origin and ground plane, then hopefully add a camera and a reference solid using the same points the effective comp center at that point in time for that origin and ground plane is 0,0,0. Element uses the comp center and the layer must be in its default position. You have to take into account the differences.

One of the easiest ways to get there is to parent the camera to the origin reference solid you created, then reset the position of the original layer to comp center, then release the parent. This will move the origin and ground plane to comp center. If you have placed any other solids, nulls, or any other layers in the scene they must all be parented to the origin and ground plane reference before you move it to comp center.

I hope this helps. I strongly suggest you spend at least an hour here VIDEO COPILOT | After Effects Tutorials, Plug-ins and Stock Footage for Post Production Professional so you can figure out how Element works with AE's 3D space.

    Hi Rick!

Thank you SO MUCH!!  Yes.  I do better with tutorials as my mind is in 3d.  lol.  Pilot by trade.  You just about solved my entire question(s)  I will get into that manual.  I'm so new at this of course I was like Aim, Shoot, Ready.

So if I may, comp center is composition center?  And I would further guess here that comp center is the geographical center of the composition center?  That solved the mystery as to why my buildings in VC Element 3d were floating. in space.

So if I understand correctly here then when I get my camera solid and all as you described above, if done correctly my buildings ought to land on the camera solid or other solids as needed?  Again I am sure the manual will explain a lot.

Ive signed up on linda or linked in, and  I am spending as much time searching for my answer as I would be learning.

    Thanks so much!!

Second question is when they do get close to being set right.  The objects then drift.  This has been asked b4 but I could not find it.

If anyone has good tuts on drifting models not anchored to the ground that would be great!
