Question

After Effect keeps crashing

Suddenly the program crashes when I'm working on a project where the only option is to send a report or not and regardless of what you choose, the app closes down and all the work you've done after saving the project is lost. When I open the project again, I get a bunch of different message boxes where, among other things, it recommends starting in safe mode. I've tried updating the app, updating the computer, lowering the render quality and resolution in the project, reducing the file size of the clips I use, but nothing helps. What can I do? Premiere Pro has also started to crash in the middle of a project and then nothing was saved. I work on a MacBook Air. Thanks in advance!

In my experience, crashes like you're describing are connected to an effect which is using the graphics card.  It might be trying to do something like load in an extra file which it can't find / process and then the GPU times out and AE is forced to close.

Two things you can try:

  • In File > Project settings switch to Software Render only
  • In Edit > Preferences > Import, uncheck Enable Hardward Accelerated decoding

Would you be able to zip up all the files and project and send them to me to see if I can reproduce the issue? I'm not finding any crash reports that have been sent in connected to the email address you're using here on the Forums so hard to know what the crash actually is.

Did you upgrade your OS recently?

Make any other hardware changes?

Change any system preferences?

Install any plugins?

Did you try Safe Mode?

Yes I have upgraded my OS to the latest version, not any hardware or system preferences changes or installed any new plugins I think 🤔 🤔 I've tried safe mode but unfortunately that doesn't help
