Question

After Effects 2021 Hand Tool and Zooming

What is wrong with Hand Tool in AE 2021? It drags everything in the scene not smooth anymore. All of my objects (layers) in the scene kinda jumps when I drag the scene with Hand Tool and I can see it perfectly when I use 400-800% zoom, but my masks on the objects are much smoother, it might looks like they are changing their positions independently. To be clear what is happening, when I drag the scene with Hand Tool, it looks like my objects (layers) are dragged by "1, 2, 3, 4" pixels and masks on the objects by "0.1, 0.2, 0.3" pixels, but in reality they are not, it is visual bug only. Because of that, I put wrong positions for my masks, bercause my objects can be highner or lower, but I can't see it. I found a solution, just disabled Hardware Acceleration, but now my AE timeline is not smooth...I saw that people also have similar problems in Photoshop 2021. I didn't have such problems in AE 2020. Any solution?

I am using 64GB RAM, i9 9900KS and pair of 1080Ti.

Hi Rivenverse,

Thanks for writing in.

What's the exact version of After Effects you're using? Does it happen in all the projects or a particular one? Also, could you share a screen recording of the issue?

We're here to help, just need more info.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hi.

Sure, my AE version is 18.2.0 (Build 37). I happens in new projects and in old project too.

I uploaded a short video describing this problem. With hardware acceleration AE work better, but in 2021 it ruins all my layers. If I disable hardware acceleration this problem will gone, but AE will not be as responsive as before, that's why I need Hardware Acceleration. As I said, in AE2020 everything was ok. On the moment of creating this thread I couldn't just use AE2020, because my project was already created in AE2021, but now I have this choice, so I wonder, do I need to back to AE2020 or some small fix can do it.

Thanks for the screen recording.

Looks like it could be related to the GPU. Make sure your GPU driver is updated? if it is already, try doing a clean installation. Here's how: https://www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/help/connectivity-and-performance/article/clean-installation-of-nvidia-drivers/000063728

Also, reset the preferences of After Effects: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-after-effects/td-p/10634342

Let us know if it helps.

Thanks,
