Disable Hardware Acceleration: In Preferences > Preview, uncheck "Hardware Accelerate Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels."
Update Drivers: Make sure your GPU drivers are up-to-date.
Increase RAM Allocation: Go to Preferences > Memory and allocate more RAM to After Effects.

That's not ideal.

 

What's the exact version of After Effects? Are there any third-party plug-ins installed? What's the version of the GPU driver installed? Please ensure that it is updated to the latest.

i have the latest version of AE, i have some third-party plug-ins installed, but I tried to start After Effects in safe mode and it still remained laggy, all the gpu drivers are te latest too
