After Effects crashes when I type in a text box

After Effects has started crashing when i type more than a few characters worth of text in a text box.

It's happening in any After Effects project I use. I tried updating after effects to the latest version (23.2.1) and that didn't help. I also tried using the 2022 version and that had the same problem.

I tried "reset character" as a previous post reccomended and that seemed to help for a moment and then after a few seconds it crashed again.

I've also tried:

Purging disk cache

Deleting my preferences,

Uninstalling and resinstalling after effects,

Updating my Mac OS to the latest version of Monteray

Having creative cloud open or closed while AE is open.

Turning the computer off and on again.

I'm on Mac OS Monteray 12.6.3

Mac studio

Apple M1 Max

64gb ram

I'm doing projections for a theatre show that uses lots of text. I also often use text so this is very annoying.
A workaround is to make all of the text image files in photoshop and import them but it's not ideal as I'd prefer to be able to edit and animate them in after effects.

Since I started troubleshooting this issue After Effects has also crashed twice trying to open a project. And crashed once trying to import a photoshop file.

Hi Nishu
It happens with all fonts I've tried. I have recently installed some fonts so I just deleted them and tried again and it still crashed. I had an adobe person remotely access my computer for a few hours and they couldn't solve it. They reccomended trying to update to Ventura OS, but I have other important software for my work that isn't compatible with Ventura so I'm loathe to do that if i can help it.

Hi zesty,

Sorry to hear that.

Could you try validating the fonts in the Fontbook and removing the one with the issue? If that doesn't help, try clearing the font cache.

Let us know the outcome.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hi Nishu,

Same problem I'm facing also. It keeps crashing even when I use system default fonts like Arial etc. Can you please suggest me? How to fix this on windows?

It's urgent.

Thanks,

Mayank

Hi Eddydaylia,

Sorry to hear about the crash.

It could be related to the fonts. Is it happening with all the fonts? Have you installed a new font recently? Do you see any crash report?

Let us know, we're here to help.

Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

Thanks,

Nishu

I ended up doing a clean install of my operating system and that's solved it.
