After Effects crashes when I use Roto Brush

After a few strokes using the Roto Brush tool, I get the 'AfterFX.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close' message. The clip I am trying to Rotoscope is ~12 seconds in duration, Quicktime (.MOV), and 3.6 GB. I think it was transcoded to ProRes 4444.

 

I'm using the newest build (24.5) of After Effects, but I've experienced this with other builds.

 

  • I've tried using the Roto Tool in Safe Mode with the same result
  • I've restarted Windows 11 with the same result
  • I've tried using Roto version 2.0 with the same result

 

My rig is Windows 11, Intel Core i9-11900 2.5GHz, 64GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB.

Solution: I contacted Adobe support, who were incredibly efficient at diagnosing and fixing the problem. My preferences had become corrupted, so the tech renamed the 'AppData/Roaming/Adobe/After Effects' folder to 'After Effects (old)' and relaunched AE. A new folder was created and the Roto Brush tool works without a problem.

My preferences had become corrupted, so the tech renamed the 'AppData/Roaming/Adobe/After Effects' folder to 'After Effects (old)' and relaunched AE. A new folder was created and the Roto Brush tool works without a problem.
