After Effects error: Ray-trace 3D ( 5070 :: 0 )

I am trying to create extruded vector shapes in AE CS6 and get the below error after clicking on the enable 3D toggle for the layer.

After Effects error: Ray-trace 3D: Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer.

( 5070 :: 0 )

Any thoughts on how to solve this?

I agree with you. The Raytrace engine seems to handle gpu ram rather poorly and I don´t understand why it is requiring so much computer power compared to any other ray-trace engine I came across in any 3d software. I have recently finished a project were I used the ray-trace engine a lot - and I had to reboot my machine more than I´ve ever done before (like 5-10 times a day). If I did as much as look at a website, chances were the render would crash and give me the cryptic message of 5070. And upping the sampling from 3 was just too risky, so the final result became more grainy than what I would have hoped for. And changing to CPU render would make the ray trace engine unusably slow. So, with the extremely limited possibilities with the ray trace engine compared to f.example Element 3d and considering how much VRAM it needs the whole engine seems to me as being unfinished and badly optimized. I think I will invest in Element 3D, its performing faster and giving a better result anyway and you have much more options. ..Adobe should give us the option to purge the GPU RAM in AE until they improved the code, so we would be able to multitask without rebooting EVERY time doing anything else than AE on the machine.

As for specs, I thought I bought a good machine last december when I bought a fully specced iMac late 2012, with a 680MX with 2gb VRAM.... But obviously thats far from ok specs according to what Adobe expect AE users to have for the GPU . That leaves the new unavailable Mac Pro the only option for Mac Users wanting to use the AE ray trace engine efficiently without trouble while still multitasking. That´s a bit disappointing, I hope it will get better over time .

The After Effects CC (12.2) update and After Effects CS6 (11.0.4) update include fixes and changes regarding the OptiX library for the ray-traced 3D renderer that make VRAM handling better, prevent crashes, and otherwise improve the experience in this area.

Let us know how it's working for you after you've installed the updates.

Since you don't have one of the specific few NVIDIA GPUs that accelerate the ray-traced renderer, you should skip that feature entirely. C4D will probably render faster anyway and it's more powerful. AND it's free! Read about it here: details of CINEMA 4D integration with After Effects CC

    When I meet this error,

    I changed 3 cache folder.

Preference - Media and Disk Cache - then, change Disk Cache folder, Database Cache folder, Cache folder to enough volume(more than 100GB) local harddisk drive's some folder..

by this step, I can solve this problem...

We have determined that a very common cause of this error is having CUDA drivers installed on a computer that doesn't have CUDA (i.e., Nvidia) hardware. It seems that some people have installed CUDA drivers for ATI/AMD hardware, even though ATI/AMD hardware doesn't have CUDA capabilities at all. It is this conflict that is causing the crash and/or error.

So, if you have an ATI/AMD GPU, do not install CUDA driver software. If you have done so, uninstall the CUDA driver software.

The CUDA files are in these locations:

    /System/Library/Extensions/CUDA.kext

    /Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.nvidia.CUDASoftwareUpdate.plist

    /Library/PreferencePanes/CUDA/Preferences.prefPane

    /System/Library/StartupItems/CUDA/

    /usr/local/cuda

Get rid of those if you don't have the appropriate hardware for using CUDA.

I have the same problem but I have one question.

    If I have this chipset

    AMD Radeon HD 6750M

    I have CUDA drivers installed.

Am I able to use Ray-Traced 3D feature with my graphic card?

CUDA is an NVIDIA technology and it only works with NVIDIA cards. Installing CUDA drivers when you have an AMD card is only going to cause you problems. If I recall correctly, there was a thread about this exact situation causing a crash the other day.

Edit: in case anyone didn't get it, the thread I mentioned is actually this very same thread. In fact, the answer to the question you just asked is the post that's marked "Correct" RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THIS THREAD

3D Ray Tracing Error 5070::0 Out Of Paged Memory  SOLVED (in my situation on a Mac Pro 10.8.3)

I started experiencing this issue when enabling the Ray Tracing Engine in AE CS 6, as soon as I turn it on.
I am working on a ATI Radeon 5870  standard apple card.

Just before experiencing this error I had tested a CUDA card and therefore had installed the latest CUDA drivers.

But I had not removed the Nvidia CUDA drivers after reinstalling the ATI card.

Well guess what, as soon as I removed the CUDA drivers, my error 5070::0 Out Of Paged Memory was gone

If you need to remove CUDA drivers, here are the files to remove:

If you have installed CUDA, only to find it doesn't work, you may want to remove the software. There is no "uninstall" routine from Nvidia, but they kindly gave me the list of things to remove: Note that these instructions refer to the HDD:System/Library directory, and the HDD:Library directory, but you will find them all: (where HDD = name of your system disk)

    Delete the following:

    /System/Library/Extensions/CUDA.kext

    /Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.nvidia.CUDASoftwareUpdate.plist

    /Library/PreferencePanes/CUDA/Preferences.prefPane

    /System/Library/StartupItems/CUDA/

If you installed the tookits and samples, delete the following also:

    /Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0

    /usr/local/cuda

Lower your GPU memory clock speeds a little.....eg: 1025 MHz down to 950 mhz

    This SOLVED all my problems!!!

    Pierre,

You need to install the updates. You're using 11.0.0; the current version is 11.0.2.

    ~ADDITIONALLY~ ( SORRY - RENDERING IT FINALLY TOTALLY WORKS ! )

CLIP ALL LAYERS TO BE FROM THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE SHOWN TO THE LAST MOMENT

    EXAMPLE:

I HAD A STROKE PATH THAT WAS TRIMMED FROM 0-100.  WHEN THE TRIM WAS AT ZERO AND THE LAYER IN THE TIMELINE WAS VISIBLE, BUT THE ACTUAL ASSET WASN'T VISIBLE IN THE COMP WINDOW, I WOULD GET AN ERROR.

ALSO, WHEN I HAD A MASKED SHAPE REVEAL ITSELF, AGAIN WHEN THE LAYER WAS VISIBLE IN THE TIMELINE BUT THE ASSET WASN'T VISIBLE IN THE COMP WINDOW, I WOULD GET AN ERROR.

I figured out a fix for my machine. This error message popped up randomly after successfully using ray-traing in the past.

I recieved a few messages while trying to work around this:

    failed to remove linear chain

Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer. ( only when i switched from gpu to cpu renderer )

    failed to load ray trace

Command + Option + Shift when launching AE delete prefs on a mac

Control + Alt + Shift when you launch AE on PC

it prompts you to deletes your preferences - and my machine is running smoothly now. Hope this works for some of you out there!

Has there been any further updates on this? Problem is still persisting for me.

Likewise. I've not read through the entire thread but I'm gathering there's not been a solution to the problem. Has anyone from Adobe spoken up about it? I'm tempted to cancel my Creative Cloud subscription if I can't get this working on my apparently supported card.

On the Mac issue of failing to recognize the card, I drop in the lab and have tried several approaches in an attempt to recreate the bug. The latest test involved upgrading a 10.6.8 system with an ATI 4700 card to 10.7.4. No failure was noted. The CPU renderer worked correctly. We still do not know what is affecting certain iMacs and laptops that have only had an ATI card installed. Testing persists as time permits.

However, I was successful in another case in which the card was changed in the machine and then the OS was upgraded. We now have two machines in this state with Quadro 4000 cards installed. CUDA can't be updated and AE CS6 does not see the GPU. I have asked Nvidia for help in determining what is preventing the CUDA driver from being recognized by AE (and Premiere Pro) and what steps to take short of reinstalling the OS.

I fixed the error by backing up my mac, deleting the the system and doing a clean install of everything.  I have a mac pro with the nvidia quadro 4800, 32 gigs ram, lion 10.7.4.  The ray traced worked great until i tried to render it and got the 5070 error we have been gertting.  Looks as if the clean install is not working either.  My advice is dont do the clean install.  Anyone else run into this?

I'm having the same trouble as well.  Tried installing new Cuda drivers (4.2.9) and re-installing CS6 and that didn't help.
