Hi everybody,

I'm Paolo, sorry but I'm not an expert.

I would like to create a logo with some lightings, here an example:

Advanced Electric FX Tutorial! 100% After Effects! - YouTube

I would like to do a more simple animation, just a written and the lighting:

- 1) I did one level with text:

PAOLO

- 2) I did one level with a solid layer and I added LIGHTING EFFECT + SET MATTE EFFECT but it doesn't work.

The matte effect is set on the text "PAOLO" as Alpha channel.

The lightning doesn't consider the text as an obstacle.

I will thank everybody who could help.

Paolo

    Hi Paolo

As mentioned by Mylenium you will need a few precomps and perhaps a matte track or 2 to achieve this

I would recommend watching a few simpler demo vids than Andrews as you need to know your stuff to replicate those effects

paolob30344520 , You picked a good tutorial. Andrew Kramer knows what he is talking about. If you can't figure out how to modify the workflow to fit your needs try and find some more tutorials that include creating pre-comps and the reasons to do so. Don't rely on a Google search because more than half of the tutorials you will find are presented by enthusiasts that are using poor workflows or leave so much out of their explanations that you end up being lost.

To get a good understanding of how AE works just go to the Adobe Product page, or click on learn link in the AE Home screen (on by default) or check out the Overview section of this forum. You can find that link in the top left menu bar in this forum's home page. You'll find all the information you need to figure out how to modify Andrew's workflow to fit your project goals.

You need to pre-compose the text layer. Continuously rasterized layers are generally treated differently and effects that are dependent on fixed alpha boundaries often do not work other than by pre-composing the layer being fed to them.
