After Effects message: not all layers were converted because of empty or unsupported content

I just sent this to illustrator and they say it's an AE problem.  I am an advanced beginner.  I have sent illustrator files to AE at least 100 times. This time all is coming into AE as composition size, even when I say retain layer size.  Then I get the message below when I want to create shapes.  I cannot solve this puzzle.  Anyone?
