After effects not responding

My after effects isn't responding but I have autosave on. Unfortunately, I did not save my project beforehand. Is there anything I can do? (Mac, After Effects CC 2017)

If you didn't do any save at all on the project before the problem, it's gone.  Sorry.

You will eventually learn that After Effects users save like people in Chicago vote -- early and often.

how often do you recommend? it's probably not too insane to save after every little change, is it?
