Question

After Effects refusing to export, or export correctly.

I have been working on a small project in After Effects CC 2019 for a class and have finished all necessary edits and was trying to export. The project just consists of one clip, cut up and re-positioned, with some rotoscoping. The main rotos are are about 2 seconds long and there are 2 of them. the other two are just rotos of objects sitting still. The total length of the composition is 44 seconds, 9 frames.

At first, I tried doing what I normally would and sent it to Media Encoder to render through h.264. Whenever I started the render, the bar stayed on the prep stage and never actually started rendering. I thought it was just media encoder and decided to go the hard way and try exporting directly from AE into an AVI to be converted later.

At first it didn't render at all, then it did render. Though this render was around 5 minutes long (I don't know why it was that long, the composition was set to 44 seconds, 9 frames) and had no video or audio in it.

I have also tried exporting to TIFF or PNG sequences to be converted later but AME and After Effects refused to even start the render.

I have tried to export it on two separate machines with the same results. If anyone could help out, it would be greatly appreciated as my grade for the project depends on me getting this out.

Thanks

As a workaround for you:

Instead of outputting via media encoder, go to Composition > Add to Render Queue. In here, choose Best Settings and then choose the format that you want to output in the Output Module settings. I'd advise using an uncompressed setting and then opening the finished render in Adobe Media Encoder afterwards to choose your final delivery settings.

At least this will enable you to render out a movie and hopefully AME will allow you to directly import this to format it.

I have gone through the render queue in many formats like quicktime, AVI, TIFF and PNG sequence. None of these options even seem to start the render except AVI on occasion. AVI does not export the video, instead just a black screen longer than the composition itself is exported

No video, check the comp and make sure you have not set the video layers to guide layers.

Problems with renders, especially for those just starting out, custom render settings.

Wrong things in the render or items out of position, comp is not set up with Active Camera view turned on.

If you want us to diagnose your problems you need to select the layers that are giving you problems, press the U key twice to show everything you have done to the layers, PrintScreen and Paste to the forum or Ctrl/Cmnd + 3 on a Mac and drag the screenshot to the forum so we can see what is going on in the comp.

as other users mention there are a bug in AE and AME CC2019 so sending file to AME will not render at all, however the only solution you have is to export your file directly from AE, really i'm still not sure why you get a black screen when you try to export from AE directly, so can you share some screenshoot about your workflow and render settings.

I didn't know which details exactly you would need so I just recorded some of the menus for you to see. the only effects on the layers are just some rotos and nothing else other than general assembly of clips.
