Question

After Effects suspended by Windows during RAM preview

We are previewing a project with RAM preview. The preview uses all available allocated RAM but after a minute or so, Windows 10 will suspend After Effects (shown with the green leaf in task manager) and the program freezes. We try to resume the process from Resource Monitor but the application is still unusable at that point. Is there something we can try to preview without getting suspended by Windows?

    That sounds really frustrating.

Can you try running the system maintenance troubleshooter and check if it helps?

    1. Type troubleshooting in the search box on taskbar and click on it in results.
    2. Click "View all" and then click "System maintenance".
    3. Click "Next" and follow on-screen instructions.

You can also try performing a "clean boot" to see if that helps: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

The troubleshooting search takes me to the Troubleshoot section of Windows Settings and there is not a "View all" or "System maintenance" option available here. Any other recommendations on where to find that?

    Hi dave-klim,

Sorry to hear about your issue.

Does this happen in all your projects?

Do you have any third-party After Effects plugins or scripts?

I wonder if After Effects is leaking memory here due to an effect or a plugin.

    Thanks,

    Rameez

    What are your system specifications?

Generally, After Effects requires 8 GB minimum (16 GB or more recommended) as per System Requirements.

You could try limiting the RAM usage by going to Edit > Preferences > Memory... and changing the blue number.

It's actually a pretty stacked machine we bought purpose built for video editing. It's got 64 GB of ram and a top tier intel 8 series processor with a RTX 2080. It's running used RAM by After Effects up to about 54GB when Windows suspends it. We have AE set to leave 10GB available to Windows applications.

Are you trying to send the preview to a video monitor and not a normal computer monitor?

We're sending it to a normal computer monitor. It's a preview inside after effects.
