Question

After Effects very slow, high ram usage but marginally cpu and gpu use

Hello.

Despite my bad english I will try to explain my issue.

AE is really, really slow, especially with EXR´s. I have rendert an animation with C4d and now I do the final adjustments with AE. EXR´s are 1080p - 16 Bit.

For a 20 sec 1080p clip with some color corrections, AE needs up to 10 Minutes or longer to calculate the preview. Even with 1/4 quality.

It also pushes my Ram to 99% load. Sometimes AE freezes completely.

When it`s (hopefully) finally calculated, Media Encoder also needs up to 15 Min to convert it into the final Clip.

I also noticed that the CPU and GPU are not really working that much while calculating.

CPU load ist about 20% and GPU about 2%.

I reset the presets, I cleared all cache, but nothing helps. Is there an issue with the current version of AE?

Because this is not ok. It´s like working on Mid 90´s PC...

I'll be very grateful for any help! Thomas

AE's EXR handling is terrible and always has been, so start by actually using a different image format. TIFFs and PSDs work just as well. that alone already may improve performance considerably. Other than that the usual stuff: Check your hardware acceleration settings, update your graphics driver, check the caches.

So! I´ve installed an older Version (18.2) And now it´s much much better!

Adobe is the only developer I know who regularly makes there updates worse.

In german we have a word for this kind of "improvements" -> Verschlimmbessern!
