I am trying to remove an object from a video using content-aware fill. The object interacts with a moving object in the video, so I created nine reference frames at different points to help guide the removal(I'm not sure if that is relevant to the problem or not). When I 'Generate fill layer' After Effects analyzes the footage just fine, but upon finishing that step and moving onto rendering it always gives me the same error message:
After Effects warning: CAF: external library failure(Adobe::PM::Exception).
I am hoping someone can help me. The video files are all saved to the same file on my PC. The computer has done a fill successfully (it was an 'edge-blur' and looked bad, now I'm trying an 'object', but the problem happens no matter what now) but it just wont do it now. So far I have tried switching the rendering to 'use mercury software only' and purged the video cache, but no luck. Thanks for any help 🙂

Without seeing your footage and the reference keyframes we can't judge your issue. To me it simply seems like yet another misunderstanding of the powers and limitations of AI-based algorithms. You may be trying to use it in a way it was never intended for and/ or the scenario you use cannot be solved, because the algorithm never encountered it before and thus has no template to deal with it. Other, more conventional solutions may be much more appropriate. At any rate, we need to see something to make an assessment.

Well, can you suggest some possible causes?
How many reference frames should you use? And how does AE know which ones to use when?
What is the external library specifically?
Also what does "CAF: Out of memory" mean and how can we fix that?

Is there any update for this issue? I'm experiencing the same error message as well as AE crashes now. I'm doing a Content Aware fill that I've done many times before. I masked part of the footage that I want to clean up and set the mask to Subtract. When I select Generate Fill Layer, the software analyzes the footage anywhere between 3-100% but then it fails and I get the message " after effects warning: CAF: external library failture (error in opencv) ". What is happening? I've never experienced this before even though I've done content aware hundreds of times.

I deleted some files to make room on my hard drive and now I don't get that error anymore. Depending on the size of the project you might have to delete a lot

I was having the same issue. Tried trimming the video by a lot so it wouldn't have much to process and it worked, I don't know how that's useful but now I know that the feature has limitations like that...
