Animated lines connecting to points

New Here ,
Dec 07, 2021 Dec 07, 2021

Hello guys,

I have my own business and work with a company who produce educational content for weighlifting and i found this guy with some awesome animations, that would be very useful for me/us.

Here is the link https://www.instagram.com/p/CSrkwdzN8Ao/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Any tips how to produce something like this easily?
I have tried motion importing some kind of circle, adding rotation to it and adding it to a null object to track, but the null object does not stay where i need to and it keeps jumping away or it loses itself whenever some other object goes over the original place of null object (plate over shoulder or something).

The biggest problem is also the chaning lenghts of the lines, i cannot find anything on google or youtube that would help me.

Thank you

The tracking doesn't look difficult - go to the BorisFX site and look at their Mocha Essential Tutorials to get you started.

To create a single self-adjusting line, create a Shape Layer Path with two points, with the Pen Tool and then use the provided Script Nulls Follow Paths script. You will find lots of tutorials online for this.

The biggest problem is also the chaning lenghts of the lines,

Effects --> Generate --> Beam. You place the ends of the beams in the circles and connect them to the position animation, then tweak the start and end. Nothing more will need to be doen, because once set up the values stick and adapt automatically. no need for clunky mask-based setups as suggested by Mr. Kahlenberg. The rest of course will require some manual tweaking. I'm pretty sure even the guy on IG spent most of his time fixing botched tracks or manually animating the positioning of the circles based on the reference footage. There are simply limitations on how to automate this if you don't want to plaster your athletes and their equipment with extra markers, which would then need to be painted out just as laboriously. You're caught between a rock and a hard place on that. there's no way to get this fully automated and you just have to put in more work.
