Best way to achieve overlay on this kind of clip?

Hello community,

Please I'd love your suggestions on how to achieve realistic graphic overlays and animations tracked to surfaces on this footage.

The long and short of it is that you are looking in the wrong place. This is a task for a 3D program where you would roughly model the geometry to approximate the underlying footage and then projection map your data graphics on them. You may be able to use the camera track from AE/ mocha, yes, but otherwise an excursion to Cinema 4D, Blender or whatever can't really be avoided unless you fancy endless hours adapting the textures with distortion effects like Bezier Warp, Mesh Warp and so on. It would be a pain in the rear due to everything moving all the time.

The best way to add overlays to this 3D project would be to return to Blender and add your graphics there. You can also export a Camera and tracking data from Blender to After Effects, but both approaches will take a lot of research on your part if you are new to Blender (or any other 3D app).

A simple Corner Pin track in Mocha will give you the ability to add some color overlays and text in just a few minutes. Here is a link to a good training series using Mocha: Boris FX Mocha Training.

I took about 20 minutes to fiddle with your clip and showed you the workflow that I would follow. You'll find the run-through on Dropbox. It's not really a tutorial, just a quick narrated workflow demo. I'll keep it up for a while. I've also uploaded an AE 23 and 24 project file for you to take a look at.
