Trying to make a simple slow motion food advertisment with a black background.  What is the easiest way to make the background of the footage more pure black without effecting the subjects exposure?

If you are talking about crushing blacks on footage shot with a black background that is not 100% black then anything from curves to Lumetri may be the best option. It all depends on the shot. This works better if your Project is set to 16-bit or higher and the footage is also better than 8-bit. I have made the darkest part of this footage 100% black and still pulled up the mid-tones to give a fairly decent rendering of the clouds.

Show us what you are working with and we can probably help.

Well, let me bluntly cut to the chase: Pointless without seeing a screenshot or reference frame along with info on output formats and other requirements. It begins with how to possibly isolate the color ranges, extracting mattes and generating masks to isolate individual regions and ends with the difference of a mushy low-res H.264 clip on a mobile phone vs. colors on a fancy 4k HDR screen. Those things matter a lot and without any of that info we can't advise on what to do and what not.
