Black Smoke Effect (Need Help)

I am doing a short film that is somewhat surrealistic and for a character/creature in it, I was looking to do a smoke-like effect to make it look dark and ominous. My plan was to shoot the person in one of those green screen suits but instead, it would be black, then in post put the smoke effect around them. The problem is, is that I don't have a lot of experience (basic stuff like rotoscoping and text graphics) with After Effects for me to be able to make a Black smoke thing around the character on my own. So if you guys know of any tutorials out there that I could follow, or if one of you is willing to walk me through it I would greatly appreciate it.

That's nothing any simple tutorial can cover. Usually such stuff entails complex simulations and rotomation (animating a mesh of the character on top of the footage) in a 3D program. At the very least you'd likely have to invest in a decent particle plug-in. Otherwise you can of case create something more comical and abstract using all sorts of Fractal Noise and Roughen Edges to create smoke-like structures, but however you do it, it's going to involve a lot of work. Anyway, it might help if you provide an example of what exacxt look you're going for so people can advise more specifically or else this could turn into an endless thread with lots of stuff that doesn't help you in the least. It's just too complex a topic.

Here is a link to a video I found with pretty much the exact effect I need.
