Question

Black Solid Layers Turning White

I'm working on a Video Pilot tutorial on how to make rain effects on a glass window. But I'm stuck. For some reason when effects are applied to the layer, it turns them white which makes the content invisable. And when I try to apply a shape mask to a solid layer, it doesn't reveal the masked section – it all stays the same color. I feel like there is some alpha setting that is causing this change. Any help is greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Found it! Seems the background color on the background pre-comp was set to white. When I changed it to black, everything looked correct. Strange that it would affect how other layers appear even when turned off, but that's what worked.

You should not be working like that anyway.  You should always have transparency enabled and use an actual layer for backgrounds whether it be a solid or whatever else.  In fact if I remember correctly Andrew corrects this oversight later in the video.  NEVER use the background in the comp settings, it wont render anyway so even though everything looks fine in after effects when you go to render things wont be right,

He has transparency disabled...you might have it enabled.

Probably user error. Select the problem layer, press uu, Print Screen and paste to the forum so we can see what you are doing. This is probably user error.

It would also be very helpful to copy and paste the URL for the tutorial in the forum, or if it is on YouTube or Vimeo you can post it directly using the toolbar.

Hi,

I think I know the turorial you're referring to.  Please give time of place in tut where you're getting stuck so I can look at it.

At 6:37 he turns off the cityscape background layer, revealing just the black solid layer with the white "rain" drops on a black background. When I do this my layer appears white.
