Cache filling very quickly, having to clear it multiple times a day

Recently I have noticed I get errors and freezes due to the cache being full very frequently. I have the cache set to 100gb. In the past I had it at 50gb and never seemed to have an issue. In one of the recent updates (not 100% sure which one) it has now become a massive nuisance. Even with 100gb I have to clear it several times a day. Even when only working with very basic compositions consisting of shape and text layers with no heavy effects on.

Sometimes it thows up an error mid render, but it's hard to tell before the render whethere it will hit the limit or not.

Are there any settings that could be causing this? Or a way to get the cache to overwrite old stuff with new stuff rather than just throw up errors or crash at render time?

I seem to go through periods where this happens.  I've got a separate drive with 300Gb allocated and regularly have to clear it.  I don't know how much difference it actually makes, but I remember seeing some advice on here to go to the actual drive location and delete all the files there once in a while.  Emptying the cache doesn't remove everything. Another tip I can suggest is to set up a keyboard shortcut for it, which makes the process less painful.
