Make sure you're using the right Default Output in Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware.

In After Effects menu go to "Composition" -> "Preview" and check on "Audio".

"Make sure you're using the right Default Output in Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware."

This was very helpful. I just upgraded to CC 2018, and the sound stopped working all of a sudden. (Literally had CC2017 running just seconds before switching.) For some reason the default setting said it wasn't working, with a working setting right under it. So I just switched to that.

Hi I can help you

Go to Edit > Preferences > Previews > In previews go down and you'll find Mute Audio When Preview Is Not Realtime . In default it has been enabled you need to do is disable that and after click ok . This will solve your problem . If this trick didnt work stay tuned or contact to Adobe Support Team

Also, hold down Ctrl/Cmd while scrubbing the timeline to hear the audio, and Ctrl-Alt / Cmd-Opt to just hear the sound without updating the preview.

Please read manual/search forums.. This is probably the #1 questioned asked....

In summary, hit 0 numpad to rampreview sound, hit . (period on numpad) to hear just audio. The length of preview depends on the amount of ram you have and the complexity of your project.

If you have a long project (longer than 20 or 30 seconds), you might want to instead render a lowres temp movie.
