Maybe it's a GPU driver issue, what happens if you disable hardware acceleration?

What's the size of your Solid? Could it be small and lurking away from your current, zoomed in Comp View?

And ensure  you're working with non-square pixel imagery if you're going to enable Pixel Aspect Ratio correction for your composition.

Select the solid in the Project Panel and check the size in the Info displayed to the right of the thumbnail. If the size is the same as the comp try dragging the solid from the Project Panel to the layer and see if it shows up. If it does not, let us know. It means something strange is going on with your system that is not normal and it could be a GPU driver. You should also try importing a png file or some video footage.
