"Change the Preview Resolution
When your video preview is slow or does not work at all, try to change the preview resolution to fix the After Effects preview not working issue. Click on the Resolution icon at the bottom of the composition panel. By default, it is set to Auto, and you can reduce the quality to half, third, or quarter." Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Sometimes outdated or incompatible drivers can cause issues with software like After Effects.
- Check for Software Updates: Make sure you're running the latest version of Adobe After Effects. Sometimes software bugs are fixed in newer updates.
- Adjust Composition Preview Settings: Go to Composition > Composition Settings > Advanced tab, and try changing the preview options such as Adaptive Resolution and Skip to 1/2 or Skip to 1/4.
- Disable OpenGL: In After Effects, go to Edit > Preferences > Previews (Windows) or After Effects > Preferences > Previews (Mac), and then uncheck "Enable OpenGL."
- Check for Third-Party Plugin Issues: Sometimes third-party plugins can cause instability issues. Try disabling or removing any third-party plugins and see if the problem persists.
- Reset After Effects Preferences: You can try resetting After Effects preferences by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac) while starting the application. This will prompt you to confirm whether you want to delete your preferences.
- Check Disk Space: Ensure you have enough free disk space on your system drive and the drive where your project files are stored. Lack of disk space can cause performance issues.
- Run After Effects as Administrator: Right-click on the After Effects shortcut and select "Run as Administrator" to see if it makes any difference.
- Check for System Resource Usage: Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows) and monitor CPU, RAM, and disk usage while using After Effects. High resource usage may indicate a bottleneck or problem.
