Change Interpretation Rules for Footage

Hello fellow pixelpushers.

Is it possible to change the preference how AE is intepretating Footage? I would like to have all clips imported with "separate fields: upper" and "preserve RGB".

I found something about the "Interpretation.txt" but my changes to the document aren't working.

Not sure if you can edit the Interpretation.txt file but you can do it in a couple of seconds inside After Effects. As soon as you interpret one footage, go to File > Interpret Footage > Remember Interpretation. Then select all the files and go to File > Interpret Footage > Apply interpretation.

yes, but doing it a dozen times per day is tidous.

And what would your proposed change to the import dialog in your Ideas post change about that? The rest doesn't make much sense if you don't show us how you have modified your interpretation rules.

There should be preferenced interpretation checkboxes in the import section of the preferences. There are other preferences already.

I just changed the color managment part for HD files. Honestly, I have no idea what I was doing there and I don't think that I should need to know it anyway.

You may need to change the rules' ~ to an = so its actually enforced. Other than that I'd simply create a new rule that overrides all others or add the # to the others to turn them off.

If you may guide me to a guide how to write a new rule, I would do so.

I'll have to dig through my files when I'm back at my computer. Haven't done this in ages, but I think it basically boils down to just blanket everything with  * except for the resolution and making the fields setting mandatory as I was already hinting at. At least that's how I remember it from the Avid glory days...

Here's something we used for a while:

1280, 720, 25, *, *, = L, *, *, "sRGB", *

This was during the transition to HD and we swapped the fields due to bugs in Lightwave 3D and Avid at the time. Can't remember the reason for sRGB, but if memory serves the AdobeRGB profiles would blow out colors back then. Not sure how useful this is to you.
