If I create a solid layer for a background, then decide I don't like the color I chose, is there a way to change the color without deleting the layer and adding a new one?

So here's the actual answer, where you modify a solid that already exists.

1. Find the solid you want to replace, in your timeline
2. Locate the coresponding asset in your project library (usually under a folder called 'Solids')
3. Left-click and choose 'Replace Footage > Solid'
4. This will brind up the solid editing panel so you can change it however you want.

Open the solid settings by using the Layer Menu or by selecting the solid in the timeline and pressing Ctrl/Cmnd + Shift + y

The AEs have really intuitive controls, indeed.
