Composition background colour not showing

I'm trying to set the background colour of a composition via the composition settings, but it won't show.

All I get is the transparent squares... which makes it really hard to see what I'm doing

Am I doing something wrong?

I can add a solid colour but that means I have to keep turning it on / off once I'm finished editing that particular comp
