Depth to text for real 3D feel?

Hello world.

I am new to After Effects but I have been working on lynda.com tutorials and have done some creative filters for some text.  I am frustrated with the typical 3D appearance and I am wanting to learn how to put depth onto my text to really make it look 3D.

Can anyone direct me somewhere or perhaps provide any helpful information.
