Effects seem to have stopped working

Hi All,

all of the effects seem to have stopped working in AE,

I recently had to wipe my machine as AE was becoming un-useable, play back was lagging badly to the point where it didn't move.

I had 100gb free on the the internal hard drive that it was installed on and the media cache was on an external drive with 500gb allocated.

since wiping and reinstalling everything playback seems better but now all the effects have stopped working.  E.g if apply drop shadow no drop shadow appears the text just stays as it.

im running the latest version of AE
