GPU effects error (When putting shadow/highlight below other effects)

Question

Hello, and good day to all!

Not so long ago, I came up with a mysterious problem that occurred while editing in After Effects.

After finishing everything, I put an adjustment layer on top of all layers to put my colorings and such. I put:

(In order):

Saturation

Contrast

Shadow/highlight

But one thing. A "GPU Effects Error" has occured, and my preview is lagging so much even when the preview resolution is at quarter. Here's an example (picture not mine, but it's the exact same message):

But the thing is, I was able to put more and stronger effects before in my adjustment layer, so why now? I asked.

Now, I played with the settings until then... I put Shadow/highlight on top of everything, and the errors finally stopped. Put shadow/highlight below everything, and the error appeared. Put it on top of everything again, and the errors disappeared.

In conclusion, it becomes okay when I put shadow/highlight on top of every other effects

I'm over this problem, but i still can't sit right with this, so may I ask why this is happening?

Without any exact info about your projects and your system nobody can tell you much, but the obvious answer would have to be that your GPU acceleration is not working right to begin with. Messing around with effects order, pre-composing or any such thing may simply be forcing AE into software-only rendering mode due to a feature or effect that does not work with hardware acceleration. And that is likely pretty much the answer: You need to straighten out your system#s graphics driver and check the relevant hardware acceleration settings in AE. anything beyond this generic advice wil lrequire specific information about your computer, your project and perhaps screenshots.

There is no explicit way to check this. You can view the GPU info from the relevant section of the preferences and the assumption simply is if it is listed correctly, everything should work. Unfortunately there really is no simple way to deal with all this stuff. You only realyl notice once you try to work. so for all intents and purposes, take your time and observe the behaviors.
