Question

hard matte choker crashes AE

Hi,

I am applying a hard matte choker onto a typewriter effekt.

See here: self-sizing rectangle to textsize with typewriter effect?

I can preview it without problems. Sometimes it makes AE crashes however while working and EVERY TIME I want to render it out AE crashes immediatly.

It only occurs in the combination of typewriter effekt and matte choker.

(I replaced the hard matte choker with a soft matte choker for a try. That doesn't crash, but works much slower).

I don't want to rebuilt everything again. Please help!

FYI, I've suffered the same problem and after reinstall a couple of times, and trying with CUDA, no CUDA, Mercury,GPU... After experimenting a lot, I realized that  my firewall (AVIRA/ANTIVIR) was the cause of the constant crashing.

I hope the info helps somebody in the future

I am really surprised about your solution to this issue, I spent almost 3 weeks now with this issue with box blur or fast box blur also with Simple Choker and matte choker and I can't use them, did all the instructions from adobe to solve it but with no luck and simply you saved my life.
I really appreciate your comment, thank you man

    Hi Reiner_M,

Sorry to know that you're running into crashes while rendering this project.

I downloaded your project and rendered it without any issues. Looks like this is system specific.

Let's wait for others on this thread to confirm.

    Thanks,

    Rameez

Without any exact crash info and details such as render settings nobody can really tell you much. could be as trivial as the Choker's built-in blur function running out of memory due to the large kernel size. You may just not see it wehn working at reduced preview resolutions. Conversely, whatever expressions you use could produce different results for similar reasons. I'm pretty sure it's actually quite logical.

What infos would you need and where do I find them?

I reduced everything to only this single sentence in a small composition: 800x200 / 25fps. Erased all expressions.

Tried Render as quicktime -> ProResLT.

    Render as quicktime -> animation

    Render as png-sequence.

    All crash.

    Tried

    Mercury-Software

    Mercury-GPU-OpenCL

    Mercury-GPU Metal

    Using a MacBookPro 2017

    2,9ghz i7; 16GbRAM, Radeon Pro

Ok so If you tryed everything - just send us your project file (if that is something that you can share) and we will check what is happening and if we are able to recreate that issue.
