Help with After Effects Gradients

Hi there! 

I'm relatively new to After Effects and I'm currently just trying to create a basic gradient fill. But for some reason despite having a smooth gradient in the tool, the actual output is this hideous unblended dual tone you can see attached. 

What am I missing here?

Expand the Gradient Fill, then decrease the x value of the Start Point and increase the x value of the End Point.
