Thank you Airweb_AE!!! I believe that was a big chunk of the problem. But, I have found another way to do it by duplicating the snow layer and then hiding it. Then putting a solid layer background of medium gray behind both. Then using Luma Key on the gray. For the snowit works. But that likely won't work for other things.

I'll try it the way you suggested next.

But you can also render the animation with a transparent background using MOV format.

Output Module: High Quality with Alpha

Then click on High Quality with Alpha and make sure format is set to Quicktime and channels is set to RGB + Alpha

Make the snow, delete the green layer, check the transparency grid to make sure there are no pixels behind the snow, and then choose
Composition/Pre-render to render a High Quality With Alpha movie of your comp. You could also just add the comp to the Render Queue and pick the High Quality with Alpha output module preset from the dropdown menu.

If you create a comp with a black background, you can just set the blend mode of the rendered movie to Screen, Add, or even Overlay to remove the black pixels.

Thank you, Rick. There are several things you mentioned that I will need to look up how to do.

One of the issues I ran into was needing a dark background just to see the snow I was creating, and then rendering with a green background.

I'll try your suggestions.

Hi Rick, I was trying to follow your instructions. But I'm using CC Snowflake for making the snow, so it needs a layer to add that affect to it first. I can't get rid of that layer. Is there any step-by-step tutorial on this anywhere? I can't find one.
